What is the reason for HDDs' failure?

Today we are talking about HDDs, nowadays technology is advancing at a rapid pace, and we are seeing innovations and improvements in technology every day. One of the most significant changes we have seen in recent years is the downfall of HDDs (Hard Disk Drives).

HDDs have been the primary storage device in computers for a long time. However, they are starting to become outdated, the main reason is the slow speed and limited life of HDDs, so many people are moving to newer technologies like SSDs (Solid State Drives).

So, what is causing the downfall of HDDs?

 

Slow Read/Write Speeds:-

One of the biggest causes of HDDs is their slow read/write speeds. HDDs use a spinning disk to read and write data, which takes a lot of time to perform. On the other hand, SSDs use flash memory, which is performed much faster than HDDs and is more reliable.

Limited Lives:-

The main reason for the downfall of HDDs have limited lives, and they tend to fail after a few years of use. So, we have to change the HDDs drive after every three to four years, and cause of this we fear the loss of data, this is because of the moving parts inside the drive, so the HDDs work properly for a limited time.  On the other hand, have no moving parts inside the SSDs, so they tend to last longer and are more reliable.

Prone to Physical Damage:-

HDDs are prone to physical damage and even a small bump or drop can cause damage to the drive. This can result in data loss or complete failure of the drive. SSDs are much more durable and can withstand physical shocks and drops without any damage.

Noise and Vibration:-

HDDs produce a lot of noise and vibration when in use. This can be annoying for users and can also damage the drive over time. SSDs are completely silent and produce no vibration, making them a more attractive option for many users.

Motor Failure:-

The platters of your hard drive have stopped spinning for another reason. If your hard drive is making strange noises or warning indications, such as beeping or stuttering, the spindle motor may have failed. This mechanical failure prevents you from accessing any of the data on your hard disc and grinds it to a halt, often quite literally.

For storage, the spindle motor typically turns the disc platters at 5200 RPM or 7200 RPM, which is thousands of revolutions per minute. If they are not allowed to spin or if the fluid in the bearings dries out, motors can seize up and burn out.

Although hard drive motors are often fairly dependable, the parts are extremely sensitive to shock, such as being dropped or accidentally hit. Moreover, the motors don't tolerate conditions with a lot of moisture or heat. Another possibility is that the motor will just stop working after heavy use; this occasionally happens with very old hard drives.

Price:-

Finally, the cost of SSDs has come down significantly in recent years, we can easily purchase SSDs from an e-commerce website and computer market at affordable prices because many tech companies are manufacturing SSDs at very high speed.

 

In conclusion, the downfall of HDDs is mainly due to their slow read/write speeds, limited lifespan, physical vulnerability, noise and vibration, and the decreasing price of SSDs. If you are looking for a new storage device for your computer, it is recommended to consider an SSD or cloud storage as a more reliable and efficient option.
